Sad Kentucky Derby Ending
Our condolences to the owners and trainers of Eight Belles. She hung with the boys today, beating out 18 of them for a 2nd place in the Kentucky Derby. Sadly, some folks (and their blogs) don't miss a political jab in anything. As much as I dislike Hillary Clinton and the reasons behind her bets, this is not the time to make digs about it. -Colonel Steve readSo Much Irony it Hurts
So Much Irony it Hurts LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) May 1 - Presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton has urged a group of supporters to put their money on Eight Belles, the only filly in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. Favorite Big Brown dusts field; runner-up filly Eight Belles euthanized May 3, 2008 LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Big Brown was pulling away from the field, accelerating with every powerful stride toward the finish line in the Kentucky Derby. I couldn’t help but feel the heartbreak and frustration the owner of the beautiful filly, Eight Belles, must have felt today. Eight Belles came in second in the run for the roses but her front ankles broke from all the stress of running hard and she went down. The newscaster said that rehabilitation is next to impossible for that type of injury and because she was in pain, she was put down. It was all so sad to watch. “There was no way to save her. She couldn’t stand,” trainer Larry Jones said readJane Smiley on the Derby death of Eight Belles
Pulitzer prize-winning author Jane Smiley is perhaps best known for her novel “A Thousand Acres,” but she also wrote one helluva book in “Horse Heaven.” Of all the things I’ve read so far — including a piece asking why dog-fighting is condemned for its cruelty and horse-racing is not — I like what she has written for the New York Time’s horse-racing blog the most: Some people think there should be no horse racing. Certainly, horse racing as a spectator sport is staggering under the weight of t readYou really can’t make this up, can you?
Wince: Hillary Clinton enthusiastically picked a filly named Eight Belles to win the Kentucky Derby and compared herself to the horse. Eight Belles finished second. The winner was the favorite, Big Brown. Eight Belles collapsed immediately after crossing the finish line, and was euthanized shortly thereafter. ShareThis read

Omen for Hillary?
A filly ran in the Kentucky Derby for the first time in a while this year, and Hillary advised voters to bet on the filly. The Derby results might thereby be considered an unpromising omen. After the race, the filly Eight Belles collapsed after pulling up. According to Dr. Larry Bramlage, among the on-call veterinarians Saturday at Churchill Downs, she broke both of her front ankles and was euthanized on the track. I'm not one to stretch an analogy, but the winner was Big Brown. readDoes Kentucky Derby Reflect Democratic Race?
http://www.onebigdog.net/does-kentucky-derby-reflect-democratic-race/. The 134th Kentucky Derby ran this afternoon at Churchhill Downs and Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton placed wagers on the race (or at least they picked horses in it). As one might expect, Hillary picked the only female in the race but Obama did not select Big Brown opting instead for Colonel John (perhaps he was trying to get some military creds). I've mentioned many times in my posts that I live outside of Saratoga Springs a town not only known for its mineral baths and springs (Saratoga Spring Water) but for its horse-racing legacy (it is the oldest continuously-operating Thoroughbred track in the United States). Many of you may not know that the potato chip as we know it today was also created in Saratoga at the know defunct Moon's Lake House.
