peloponnesian war
The strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.
- An engraving of the death of Astyanax I'm still reading The Last of the Wine and I've come to the part where the main character, who is a student of Socrates, meets another student - Phaedo. I'd read the Phaedo, one of Plato's dialogues about the death of Socrates and his discussion with some friends about the immortality of the soul, as told through his student Phaedo, but I'd never learned anything about Phaedo himself. The Last of the Wine writes Phaedo as an inhabitant of the island of readRadioRebelde: I know how to win a war
I know how to win a war grad school was good for something! (hehe maybe!) The man who seeks to be the next commander-in-chief of the United States said this today. I found myself immediately cynical and disbelieving- after all, as General Wes Clark said, being held captive in a North Vietnamese prison camp (while harrowing and a horror that knows many names- Hanoi Hilton, Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, etc., it is something that I would not wish on anyone. ) is not a qualification to become com readThe New Learning That Failed
The New Criterion recently published a thoughtful article on the decline of classical learning and the core liberal arts curriculum in the university. For those who would like to understand the "dumbing down" of our elementary and secondary schools and the coarsening of our culture, this article probes the root causes. Victor Davis Hanson is a military historian, columnist, former classics professor, and author of A War Like No Other: How the Athenians and Spartans Fought the Peloponnesian War readAdvanced Agon: Three Flavors of Myth
Advanced Agon: Three Flavors of Myth July 12th, 2008 in game design | No Comments » I admit it: when I’m running Agon I’m a stickler for Classical Greek style. I don’t just want D&D with spears or a fuzzy Xena-barbarian analog, I want it to feel like mythic Greece. Hubris, arrogance, tragedy — the works. That’s a great thing about Agon: the built-in mechanics pack a lot of Greek punch. But not all Classical texts are the same. There’s one thing that varies a lot, and that’s the over readWorld Made by Hand, Part I
World Made by Hand is a beautifully written novel about a very difficult time, post-Peak Oil. Some books hit you in the gut and force you to think; and this is one of them. You may go where you don’t want to go. But it’s quite a trip. The book begins innocently enough. Two men are fishing in a stream near an old railroad bed. They are talking, enjoying each other’s company. It is “sometime in the not-too-distant future.” And thus does a story unfold over a couple of summer months. The only hin read

BREAKING NEWS: Phillies Acquire Blanton
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Phillies have acquired Joe Blanton from the A's for Josh Outman, Adrian Cardenas, and Matt Spencer. "Outman, 23, was 5-4 with one save and a 3.20 ERA in 33 games (5 starts) for Double-A Reading. Cardenas, 20, was hitting .309 in 67 games for Single-A Clearwater. Spencer, 22, was hitting .249 with six home runs and 41 RBIs in 84 games for Clearwater." The A's were considered to be in contention at this point -- but after trading their two best players, I expect the readA's Dump Blanton

Blanton to Phillies by John Perrotto The Phillies, according to industry sources, have acquired right-hander Joe Blanton from the Athletics in a trade for a package of three prospects: left-hander Josh Outman, second baseman Adrian Cardenas and outfielder Matthew Spencer. Outman is playing at Class AA Reading while Cardenas and Spencer are at high Class A Clearwater. Blanton is the second starting pitcher traded by the Athletics in the last two weeks as right-hander Rich Harden was s readBREAKING: Joe Blanton Traded To The Phillies For Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman, And Matt Spencer
In my view, and this is my freaking blog, Adrian Cardenas is a big price to pay for a below-average pitcher for 2008. A 77 ERA+ for 2008, 106 for 2007 (100 is average), and has been horrible in the past month. But hey, let’s not jump to conclusions…I read some prescient advice on backshegoes.com: Let’s not be too harsh. He’s only allowed 23 ER in his last 27 IP. Say bye-bye to the rotation Adam Eaton. We now have our horse! read

Teddy McCain
McCain sees himself in Teddy Roosevelt mold - International Herald Tribune McCain sees himself in Teddy Roosevelt mold No wonder I can’t stand the guy.* But it explains a lot. *Theodore Roosevelt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In 1901, as Vice President, the 42-year-old Roosevelt succeeded President William McKinley after McKinley’s assassination by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. (Chris Grabau of Magnolia Summer) Magnolia Summer's Chris Grabau has been hard at work recording new music as of late, but the first new music to emerge from his project in a while is a track on the Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs for 43 Presidencies project. Grabau recently took time to answer some questions about the track on which Magnolia Summer appears, "William McKinley: Czolgosz's Dream." THERE ARE A LOT OF STORIES associated with this song, and there isn't room enough to tell them. Suffice it to say the song is the product of a half-decade in my early 20s spent as part of a rather large anarchist community in the Twin Cities, starting in about 1992; I reckon this song was written about 1993. It actually borrows from a poem published in a paper in 1901, published shortly after the assassination of President William McKinley at the hands of a self-proclaimed anarchist named Leon read#25 - William McKinley, 1897-1901
Our 25th President, William McKinley was the third to die at the hand of an assassin. McKinley was a well liked politician (if there is such an animal) and was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served 14 years and was twice elected Governor of Ohio. After leaving office in 1896, he started running for the presidency at the urging of his friend and political adviser, Mark Hanna. When he was elected President in 1892, he was swept into power by the largest margin of popular votes readthe fringe of the fringe
Londonstani on the wider implications of the Nicky Reilly case: When Londonstani was growing up in his (still) unfashionable corner of the capital, Muslims were definitely not cool or "counter culture". There was little to excite your average hoodie in middle-aged subcontinental men with funny beards and short trousers. (If you're new to "hoodies", click here) Al-Qaeda changed that image, but it doesn't mean it controls it. Londonstani has spent a good few months hanging around with hoodies all read

Why is EVERYONE so Cranky?
For the next week I am smelling the flowers. I am refocusing myself on my ‘Glass is half Full’ attitude. The rest of the world seems pissed. Phil and Sergio are pissed they won’t win the British Open and if they do it won’t count because Tiger is not playing. Fox Biz is pissed because they launched their station three thousand Dow points ago…to the downside Financial shareholders are pissed because their returns look like this It’s never perfect folks.
